ALTITUDE RECORD
AIR FORCE MACHINE 49,967 FEET REACHED (Received September 30, 6.5 p.m.) British Wireless RUGBY. Sept. '29 Squadron-Leader Swayne, flying a new experimental type of high altitude Air Force machine, to-day reached a height of 49,967 feet, beating the world record of 48,698 ieet. The flight was observed by officials of the Royal Aero Club and the height attained was communicated to the Air Ministry. The figures are subject to confirmation by the Federation Aeronautique Internationale. The aeroplane and engine, constructed by the Bristol Aeroplane Company, were ordered by the Air Ministry m 1934 with a view to tho exploration ot special problems involved in extreme altitudes. It is hoped that still greater heights may be attained by this craft.
The previous altitude record was only recently set by the French pilot Georges Detre.
