GOLF CONTESTS

CHAMPIONSHIP TOURNEY LADIES' PROVINCIAL TITLE FIRST TWO ROUNDS DECIDED 3 A lighter \Hiul and drier course were conducive, to lower scores in the Auckland ladies' provincial golf championship tournament, which was continued at Middlemore yesterday. Two rounds of the championship were decided and, «t the conclusion of the day's play, the field hail been reduced to four, those remaining being Mrs. P. R. Glanyjlle, Te Awainutu; Mrs. G. F. Ferguson, Auckland; Mrs. C. N. Jacobten, Akarann; and Mrs. J. S. Colejfrove, Auckland. The surprises of the day were the defeats of the title-holder, Mrs. R. S. Dcighton, Titirangi, and of the player mho so comfortably headed the qualifying list, Mrs. A. W. Ruishton, Auckland, both of whom were eliminated in itho quarter-finals. In the first round in the morning Mrs. Deighton went out in 40 against Miss O'Neill and in that round shared ' 'ivith Mrs. Jacobsen tbe most decisive win of 7 and 6. Against Mrs. Colegrove in the afternoon, however, the titleholder was defeated by -1 and 2, hor opponent returning a card of 77 without counting the 7th hole. Very Close OontEist Displaying a repetition of her splendid form on Tuesday, Mrs. JUushton scored a comfortable win of 5 and 4 over Mrs. .Whale in the first round, but in the afternoon was defeated by Mrs. Glanville at the 19th after the closest match of the day. At 110 stage was the score more than one up in cither player's favour, and the decision might easily have gone the other way. ]n the moriiing, Mrs. Glanville, formerlv of Titirangi and now of Te Awamutu, revealed impressive form in accounting for Miss 0. Stevens, North Shore, by 4 and 3. In defeating Mrs. F. Preston, Akarana, in the first round, Miss lllston, Marton, showed distinct promise. For several seasons this player has won the Pangitikei championship. She has a free style, a feature of her play being her length from the tee and through the fairway. Her card in the morning was an 84, this equalling the best round registered by Mrs. Rushton on the first day. In the afternoon, however, Miss Jllston, after a very even contest with Mrs. Ferguson, was defeated 1 up. .■Cup Semi-finalists A player who was considered most unlucky in not qualifying for the championship, Mrs. E. L. Barker, Rotorua, revealed her true form in the morning by returning a medal round of 83, comprising 4o out and 38 home, in the first round of the Middlemore Cup handicap match play competition for the second 36 to qualify. Mrs. Barker was eliminated in the afternoon, however, by Miss M. Cooper, of Auckland. The semi-finalists in the Middlemore Cup are Mrs. L. Kissling, Auckland; Miss N. Baljantyne, Auckland; Miss M. Cooper, Auckland; and Mrs. B. Cooper, Titirangi. A bogey competition was ,also decided. Mrs. A. M. Grant, with a card of 2 down, was the winner of the match for players with handicaps from 1 to 15, while Mrs. M. H. Russell, also 2 down, was successful among players with handicaps from 16 to 25. The semi-finals and finals of both the championship and Middlemore Cup competitions will be decided to-day.
