MAINE ELECTIONS
REPUBLICANS' GAINS FOUR OF FIVE OFFICES PRELIMINARY RETURNS By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright (Received September 15, 9.15 p.m.) NEW YORK, Sept. 15 Preliminary returns in the Maine elections show clear Republican majorities for four of the live important offices. Apparently, however, the victory is not sweeping enough to indicate a national trend toward Mr. 'A. M. Landon, Republican candidate for the Presidency, for which the leaders of the party had hoped. With about half the votes counted, the Republican candidate for the Governorship, Mr. Barrows, has a lead of more than 20,000 votes over the Democrat candidate, Mr. Dubord. On the other hand, the Republican Senator Mr. Wallace H. White has a majority of only 8000 over his Democrat opponent, Mr. L. J. Brann.
The Republicans appear to have elected the State's three members of the House of Representatives by mocler' ate majorities.
A cablegram from New York on September 12 stated:—Although no national issues are involved in the Maine elections, lor historical reasons they are of tremendous psychological importance, since it is the only State which holds elections in advance of the national elections in November. The proverb lias arisen: "As goes Maine so goes the nation," although often this has not been the case.
