HOCKEY SEASON

ST. LUKE'S CHAMPIONS St. Luke's further enhances its splendid record in Auckland hockey by winning the Davis Cup competition, although the final match against YiM.C.A. at Papatoetoe was rather disappointing. Whether it was over-eager-ness or just a day off, St. Luke's did not show anything like its usual form, and in the first spell YIM.C.A. had decidedly the better of the game. St. Luke's rallied after the interval and although it was seen in few good movements it placed the decision beyond doubt.

Grammar Old Boys, which was boaten soundly the previous week by St. Luke's, gave quite a good exhibition against the weakened Papatoetoe combination. With a fairly poor defence the Grammar forwards passed the 1 ball about to great effect and were seen in some fine movements. Had they shown anything like the same confidence and understanding against St. Luke's the final score would have been very close Only one point behind, Grammar is runner-up to St. Luke's. Two rounds of the Devonport Shield competition are to be played each week until. tht> eompetition is concluded. Providing for time to play the matches for the Kent and Selector's Cup it is expected the season will end on October 10.
