THE BASIC WAGE

Sir, —The suggestion made by "Antifriction" in your issue of September 11, that in fixing the basic standard of wages, remuneration for those who have to work 44 hours a week should he of a higher scale than for those working 40 hours, seems to be a fair one. There are many firms whose office staffs are working only 38 hours weekly," hut have employees engaged in other departments at 44 hours a week and who receive no more remuneration, and very often less, though doing skilled and important work. It is possible that the Government will take such anomalies into consideration. Let us hope so. Optimist.
