WINNER OF SYDNEY CONTEST MISS LURLINE FLEMING Winner of the personality contest conducted by the Australian radio station 2CH, Sydney, under the auspices of the Amalgamated Wireless Association. Miss Lurline Fleming arrived at Auckland yesterday b.v the Niagara. Miss Fleming has already had considerable experience in wireless work, and as "Pam," conductor of the children's hour from station 2CH, is well known to children in both Australia and New Zealand. Miss Fleming said that she received a great number of letters from youthful admirers in New Zealand.

One of the 12 finalists chosen out of the 1012 competitors ir. the contest, Miss Fleming is the possessor of a delightful speaking voice. The contest was not to be confused with an ordinary personality or beauty competition, said Miss Fleming. She was not a "Miss Australia." The contest was inaugurated' in an endeavour to discover a radio personality. The icon-

testants had to sing several songs over the air and pass tests for appearances, personality, education, general knowledge and general speaking. The 12 finalists wero then chosen, each singing one song over the air, preceded by a short speech of their own composition. As contestants were known only by numbers allotted them shortly before their broadcast, instead of by their names, the winner was chosen entirelv on hor «wn merits and by popular vote. "Broadcasting to-night, and later from Suva and Honolulu, Miss Fleming will continue her journey to New York, where she will broadcast from Radio City. Her broadcasts will include talks upon Australia, as well as several songs. She will also conduct some children's sessions. Whether or not she would remain in the United States depended entirely upon the people of the United States, she said. She was interested in film work and had had a great deal of experience in amateur theatricals in Sydney. Sht» was, however, very much interested in radio work and expected that she would make it he" career.
