. TRADE IN AUCKLAND SHARP RISE IN POTATOES HIGHER VALUES FOR OATS A sudden' increase in the price of potatoes is a feature of business in grain and "produce in Auckland during the past week. With merchants now concentrating on imported onions there is only a poor demand for the local stocks. The high quotation ruling for maize continues to restrict business, while wheat is steady. A firming in the market for oats was accompanied by a rise in the price by Id a bushel to 4s 4d. Chaff and Australian pollard remain at last week's reduced values. POTATOES There has been a sharp advance in potato prices during the past few days. With values still rising rapidly, merchants' quotations vary considerably. Rates for reds range from £9 10s a ton through store to /MO sh, while whites vary from £!) 5s to .£!) 15s a ton through store. Last week reds were selling at L 8 17s (id and whiles at £'B 'is tid. The market is exceptionally firm. ONIONS It is reported that a further shipment of on'.ons has been made to Australia, where prices for imported storks arc as high as £25. a ton. The bulk of local supplies are imported, which are selling unaltered at lGs a case for Japanese and 15s Gd a bag for Californian. The first of the new season's shipments from Canada is due on September 28 and from then on merchants will be dealing with imported stocks. FOWL WHEAT The market for fowl wheat remains steady with a fair amount of business being done. There has been no alteration in the price of 6s 2d a bushel through store for graded over the past week. Sample lines are quoted about 2d a bushel cheaper. | MAIZE Quotations for maize remain at the high rate of 6s 9d a bushel through store, and only a little business is being done'. Supplies are fairly short in Auckland and toe market continues steady. BARLEY There Is a good, steady demand locally for Australian barley at 4s 6d a bushel through store, which shows no alteration since last week. The market in Australia is reported to be firm OATS AND CHAFF , There has bem an increase of Id a bushel in the price of oats over the past week, current values now being 4s 4d a bushel through store. The market is slightly firmer. The market for chaff is again a shade eajsier, but there is no change in the price of £8 10s a too through store. Stocks are fairly plentiful. BRAN AND POLLARD The shortage of bran has been slightly relieved and stocks are freer. Values remain at last .week's level of £6 los a ton through store. - Quotations for Australian pollard are maintained at the reduced rate of £8 a ton through store. The market is steady. The local value, as fixed by the Wheat Committee, is unaltered at £6 10s a ton.
