SPRINGBOKS' TOUR
ATTITUDE OF MAORIS. MEETING WITH RUGBY UNION - ■ \ PROSPECTS OF SETTLEMENT [BY TELEGRAPH —OWN COBEESPOMjItNTI * ROTORUA, Snntlay As the result of a conference held in Wellington recently between nspre. sentatives of a number of the North Island Maori tribes and members of the New Zealand Rugby Union, there is every prospect of an amicable settlement of the dispute which has sirisen in connection with the coming tour of the South African Rugby footbMl team. It is understood that after the news.. j of the Maori representatives had been fully laid before the members of the union it was decided to write to the South African Union setting out these views and asking for an assurance, that" the tourists are prepared to treat the members of the Maori race as New Zealanders and not as members of an inferior race. The Maori representatives expressed the opinion that if such an assorance were given the members of their race wpuld be only too willing to meet the tourists on the playing field and also to extend to them the friendliest of welcomes.
