DRAWN GAME PLAYED EXCITING HAMILTON MATCH A. J. AITKEN AT FULLBACK Rugby competitions were continued in country centres of the Auckland Province on Saturday. In an exciting representative match at Hamilton W aikato drew with King Country after the latter team had fmi-ihed strongly. The following accounts were forwarded by Herald correspondents:- — Hamilton.—Theie was an exciting finish to the representative match at Rugby Park between Waikato and King Country, the visiting team scoring 10 points in the final 20 minutes to make tho game a draw, 13-all. Waikato led by 10 points at halftime, two tries having been scored by' the forwards. In the latter stages of the game the King Country backs showed to much better advantage, and they were able to penetrate the home team's defence. The visitors' first five-eighth Crossman, was outstanding, while the wingers, Dixon and Phillips, were also prominent. Among the forwards Coffin, Fleming and Nelson were responsible for good work. Waikato played A. J. Aitken in the fullback position, where his good play and long kicks considerably helped his side. Waikato's halfback, L. Russell, played a steady game, and the wingers, Griffiths and Reid. were also reliable. In tho pack the Leeson brothers were good workers, each scoring a try. Soon after (lie kick-off Waikato attacked and Pardington made an opening for O. Leeson to score. Pardington failed to convert. Following up fast Taylor, a Waikatq forward, took a centring kick on the full and passed to J. Leeson, who scored. Pardington again missed. Just before half-time Solomon dropped a field goal. A few minutes after Iho resumption King Country's winger, Phillips, tricked several tacklers to score a good try, which Fleming failed to convert. Then Waikato's winger, Reid, fielded a clearing kick to run fast down the sideline and score at the corner. A sustained King Country attack followed, Fleming crossing for a try which Robinson converted. Making a strong run, the visiting winger. Dixon, crossed tho line well out, but, when he was running round to touch down between the posts J. Leeson pushed him back into the Field and the referee ordered a scrum. King Country continued to attack, Cameron scoring a good try, which Robinson converted to even the scores. Mr. T. F. Kerr was referee. In the final of the junior competition Technical Old Boys defeated Te Kowhai by 21 points to 10. Tuakau.—A challenge match for tho Massey Cup resulted: —Franklin, holders, 10, Manukau, 0. Waiuku.—ln the final of the local knockout tournament for the Waiuku Rugby Union's trophy, City beat Otaua by 12 points to 8. Tauranga.—Fine weather prevailed for tho Rugby match played between Eden (Auckland) and tho Tauranga Union's team. Tho game was fast and open. Shortly after tho start- S. Kills scored for Tauranga and later Spratt- gained a try for Eden. Well through the first half Ellis kicked a penalty goal and at the interval Tauranga led by 0 points to 3. The only try in the second half was scored by F. Olsen, the game ending:—Tauranga, 9; Eden, 3. The junior game for the Mcintosh Shield between Matapilii (Tauranga) holder, and Waimana (Whakatane), was won by Matapihi by lb points to 5, Whakatane. —There was a fair attendance at the Whakatane Domain and the weather was perfect when the Waihi Old Boys team was defeated by Wairaka. one of the leading teams of the Whakatane Union, by 14 points to 8. The pa me was rather pa ten y, although dashes ot brilliance brightened it. Wairaka was the heavier team, but Vaihi had the advantage in both thesctscrums and line-outs. Waihi proved tho better team although the score does not indicate its advantage, Outstanding in the forwards for Waihi were A. Woodlands, C, HoveJl and C. Jarvis, and in the backs J. (win" - ) and A. Farrell (first five-eighths). For Wairaka J. Guise was the out^" dl "? forward. 11. Hudson was in good form at fullback, while J. Pile, half, and J. Dodd, five-eighths, played fine games. The match was played under good conditions. In the first spell the score was even, but the homo side had the better of the second . half and at one stage was leading by 14 points to 3. lor Marlborough tries were scored by Robinson (2), Brown and Hoaro, Lane converting two and kicking a penalty goal.
