TRANSPORT DIFFICULTIES Some idea of the transport difficulties in the province half a century, ago may be gair.ed from the following item which appeared in the New Zealand He rale of September 8, 1880: —- "Iu consequence of its stay in the Waikato having been protracted "J reason of the bad state of the roads, St. Leon's Circus will not open in Auckland until Thursday of next weeK. The tei.t will be pitched ou the vacant ground near the drill shed, ail admirably central and convenient situation. , A Te Awamutu message in the same issue stated: — . "Several accidents occurred wbfjtt St. Leon's circus passed through Kihtkilii tci this place. The camels w ® re driven loose with the ponies and tbe consequence was that a number ot horses were frightened. The horses in. Patton's mail coach, running between Kihikihi and here took fright and broke the pole and the coach has been laid up ever since."
