SMITHFIELD QUOTATIONS A FIRMER TENDENCY RISE IN CHILLED BEEF (Received September 0, 5 p.m.) LONDON, Sept. 5 Following arc the latest quotations for frozen and chilled meat, with those of the previous week for comparison.

The weekly quotations are based on actual sales of wholesale quantities of carcases of mutton or lamb or 'of quarters of beef delivered to Smithfield market and/or London stores. They are compiled by the Quotations Committee, Smithfield. To arrive at the equivalent ex ship values one farthing per pound should bo deducted from the prices quoted above. Quotations given represent the average for the week, and arei. not selected lines, but for parcels fairly representative of the bulk of shipments now on offer. LAMB MARKET FIRM BETTER DEMAND FOR MUTTON The following private meat cablegrams have been received:Bank of New Zealand.—Wethers: The market is becoming firmer. Ewes: The market has improved owing to short supplies. Lambs: The market is quiet, hut firm. Prices are: —Wethers, light, 4j|d to 5-ld per lb.; heavy, 3£d to 4Jd; ewes, 3jd to 4id; lambs, twos, 7d to 7Ad; eights, 6Jd to 7d; fours, 6j!d to GJd; seconds, 6Jd to 7d. New Zealand Meat Producers' Board. —Lambs: The market remains firm with consumption satisfactory. Mutton: The demand for wethers and ewes has improved. Beef: Frozen beef is steady and unchanged. The market for chilled beef is firm, with better prices for Dominion beef owing to absence of Brazilian competition. New Zealand porker pigs: The market is quiet and unchanged New Zealand baconer pigs: Prices continue firm owing to short spot stocks.
