FANCY DRESS DANCES it was a very happy and gay crowd of people who assembled in the Town Hall, Whangarei, on ihe occasion of the fancy dress ball held by the Whangarei Convent School. Many such happy functions have leen held in the , Town Hall, but no previous gathering has been more successfd. The costumes worn were both varied »nd original and were most picturesque in the colouring. The Rev. Father Murphy thanked the sisters and all who iad contributed prizes and had helped in any way to make the event so successful. The Mayor, Mr. W. Jones, congratulated the sisters on the wonderful discipline of the children and upon the excellentmanner in which they had performed the various- dances. The judges, Mrs. W. Jones and Mrs; I). ,J. Goodwin, awarded the following prizes:—Marion Mitchell, Celtic lady; Clive Muir, pierrot; L. Murphy, Lovelock; Marian Tobin, flower* girl; Mary Murphy, a poster; M. Girvaa, poster, New Zealand Herald; Noel Woods, golfer; W. Buckley, cowboj; C. Taylor and 1. Soich, Tim and R U ; B. and B. O'Donoghue, golfer); Maureen Dennehv, queen of hejrts; M. Connell, grandmother;. M. %| o 'r, Maori boy; Pat "Hunter,' Sir Francis Drake; Keg Clueard, Bateman Brothers; Stanley •Clueard, miner; Join McCabe, king of hearts; L. ' O'Donoghue, "Folly"; •Maureen Booth, pieirette; Bay Hunter, pinrrot. The masquerade i a || held at Mangapai was very successful, notwithstanding the adverse reather conditions. Those present, inching visitors from ' the surrounding diifricts, entered fully into the spirit of fc' e m asquerade, and merriment reigned BUpreme .
