QUESTION OF SURPLUS
EAST TAMAKI FARMERS' VIEW
A motion urging the Government to pay directly to the farmers any surplus aecruiiig each year from the sale of butter under the marketing scheme, was moved at a meeting of farmers in the East Tamaki Hall on Saturday night. Several speakers said it was not sufficient for the Government to say it would return any surplus to the industry 'after consulting its leaders. "The working farmer is the man who alone is entitled to the benefit of the surplus and it should come back to him in the form of a bonus payment through his dairy factory," said Mr. C. A. Moore. Mr. T. I). Ormiston s,iid that was perhaps asking for too much. The Government might be allowed to make a levy after the manner of the Dairy Board system to ensure that there would be some sort of reserve. "It would scarcely be fair to ask for all the surplus over the guaranteed price in one, year find then expect the Government to meet any deficiency in tho following year," he added. The main concern of the farmer whs to receive whatever surplus there was in the shape of a direct pavment. .The resolution, amended to request the Government to pay directly to the suppliers of factories any assessed surplus, was carried without dissent.
