AUCKLAND RETURNS

EIGHT MONTHS' TOTALS RISE OF 25i PER CENT SALES TAX RECORD Revenue collected from all sources by tho Customs Department in Auckland during the past eight months totals £'3,185,484, representing an increase of £610,029, or nearly 25J per cent over tho figure of £2,539,455 for tho samo period last year. The total for August is £410,255, an increase of £97,870 over that for the same month of 1935. Customs duties for the eight months, amounting to £2,038,2415, show an increase of £375,820, or just over 22} per cent. The August figure, £272,666, is better by £12,218 than that of the highest previous month, April, and £7679 above December, tho best month of last year.

Motor spirit and tyro duties, taken together, have yielded £507,721, or £154,984 more, for tho eight months, but the receipts for August, £52,133, are considerably below the exceptional figure of £114,798 recorded last March and are also below those for May, January and December. ' Tyre duty shows a decrease of £961 over tho eight months' period. Receipts Prom Sales Tax The sales tax receipts for August, £72,922, are a record, the next highest total being £72,445 in Juno, and tho next £70,240 in November. The increase for tho eight months is £99,491, or a littlo over 22} per cent. Excise on beer has returned £101,573 since the beginning of the year, an increase of £15,734.

Monday The customs revenue collected nt Wellington this month totalled £289.751. compared with £243,910 in August, 1935, an increase of £45,844. For the eight months of the calendar year the revenue was £2,117,1(38, compared with £1,723,780 in the corresponding period of 1935. an increase of £393,388. The duty on motor spirit this month totalled £61,2(38, compared with £33.165 in August, 1935, an increase of £28,103. For the eight months the figures are £516,532 and £422,616, an increase' of £'123,886. Collections of tyre tax totalled £IBBO, compared with £3079, a decrease of £1199. For the eight months there was a decrease of £1713, the figures being £14.786 and £16.499 respectively. Collections of sales tax in August totalled £93,205, a new record figure, compared with £75,608 in August, 1935, an increase of £17,597. The total for the eight months, £680,802, shows an increase of £128,371 over' last year's total of £552,428. Beer excise collections for August totalled £4253, compared Avith £3964, an increase of £289. For the eight months there was an increase of £2704, the figures being £37,927 and £35,223.
