TOBACCO PRICES
NEW SCHEDULE ISSUED NO IMPORTANT CHANGES The first schedule of tobacco and cigarette prices issued by the Tobacco Trade Council, a recently-formed organisation representative of manufacturers, wholesale distributors and retail tobacconists, was issued in Auckland yesterday. So far as cigarettes are concerned., a few minor alterations only have been made. Certain linef of imported pipe tobacco have been raised 2d an ounce. The chief difference is that the wholesalers' margin of profit on tobacco has been narrowed in favour of-, the retail trade. There had been some feeling that manufacturers would advance prices, but the impression now is that if any such rise is contemp.ated it will not be put into effect until the Government is prepared to make corresponding adjustments in tariffs so that overseas tobaccos and cigarettes would not gain a market advantage. Any such action is not thought possible until the Minister of Murkatmg. the Hon. W. Nash, has completed his visit to England.
