LABOURERS' WAGES
BOROUGH OF WAIHI LEVEL OF 1931 EXCEEDED [BY TELEGRAPH —OWN CORRESPONDENT] WAIHI, Thursday The wages of borough labourers will be increased to slightly more than the 1931 level of £-1 8s a week as from July 1 last. This was decided on at the meeting of the Waihi Borough Council last evening. Drivers and erushermen and rjuarrymen will also receive increases. The total increase for the foreman's staff as from July 1 to March 31, 1937, will amount to £235 17s 6d, or an annual increase of £320. Outdoor workers have been working a 40-hour week since 1932, and although their hourly rate of pay remained at 2s, the fact that there was no Saturday work reduced their earnings from £4 8s to £l. Labourers will now receive 2s 2Jd an hour, or £4 8s 4d a week, as against £4 8s in 1931; drivers, £4 12s 6d (£4 6s 8d); crushermen and quarrvmen, £4 19s 2d (£4 10s). "The provisions of the legislation are going to have a l'ar-reaching effect on the finances of this council tpr the current financial year," said tho town clerk, Mr. 10. G. Wcstbury.
