PAKURANGA HUNT
meeting postponed TO BE HELD ON WEDNESDAY TARANAKI DATES ALTERED Heavy rain that fell almost without intermission during Friday night and Saturday morning decided the committee of the Pakuranga Hunt at an early hour to postpone until Wednesday its annual race meeting, which was to have been held at Ellerslie on Saturday, Tho races of the combined Tarnuaki and Egmont-Wanganui Hunt Clubs, which were scheduled for next Thursday and Saturday, have consequently been put forward ono week until September 3 and o. The last occasion on which a postponement was deemed prudent was on tho second day of tho Auckland Racing Club's Spring Meeting on October 15, 1934, which was held on the following day. The third day of the Great Northern meeting in, 1924 was also put off from Saturday, June 7, to the following Wednesday. The Pakuranga Hunt did not take out a pluvius policy, nor has any other meeting at Eller'slie been insured. AWAPUNI GALLOPS WANGANUI PREPARATIONS STEEPLECHASERS SCHOOLED [fhom our own correspondent] PALMERSTON NORTH, Saturday Although tho tracks at Awapuni this morning were heavy, those undertaking fast work were allowed to work on the outside of the course proper, while the two-year-olds ran next the rails. Dungarvan (W. J. Brotighton) and , Cloudy Bay (G. Tattersall), who claim engagements at Wanganui, ran the last five of six furlongs in 1.12. Cloudy Bay made the pace and Dungarvan, who is a lazy worker, failed to make any 'impression on her. Dawning Light (Broughton), who has been entered for the hack events as well as the Wanganui Guineas, ran her first three furlongs in 425, and six in 1.24 3-ss. Although the second half was a shade slower, the filly was holding on quite well. ' Mirth (Broughton), who is in the Maiden Race on the opening day at Wanganui, ran an easy six furlongs in 1.32, while Laggard (B. Browne), who is in the same event, ran six furlongs with Taumau (M. H. Nicol) in 1.27, after running the first three in 43 2-ss. Taumau was going the better at the close. Severe (Broughton) secured an advantage over Round Score (C. Thomson) at tho jump-off from the six fur- • , longs post and she stayed there, running the last three furlongs in 42 2-ss. Finnesko (P. Rae), who is to contest the Durie Hack Handicap at Wanganui, ran three furlongs in 435. The Defoe gelding looks all the better for his race at the Manawat'u Winter Meeting, but it is doubtful if the turning nature of the Wanganui course will suit this bigstriding galloper. Lady Ina (M. H. Nicol), who is still carrjnng a good deal of surplus condition, covered the last two of three furlongs in 2G 4-ss. Morrath (W. J. McDowell), who looked likely to win a hack steeplechase two or three months ago. but whose transfer did not come to hand quickly enough to enable her to do so, left six furlongs behind in 1.31 3-5. A proficient jumper, her turn will come. L. Knapp will take Miss Pango, Cordon, Prince Reno and Evermore to the New Plymouth meeting, while Mrs. A. W. McDonald will be represented by Waitaunaha. Prince Reno (McDowell) and Miss Pango (L. Parkes) were sent over two rounds of the hurdles. They maintained a strong pace throughout, but both displayed a tendency to rap the top panel. Cordon (McDowell) and Waitaunaha (A. McDonald) were associated on a couple of rounds of the schooling steeplechase fences in the "bull-ring." The former, assisted by his having the inside running, always appeared to be doing the better. The Bulls-trained candidate for the Egmont-Wanganui Hunt Cup, Hymgreat (C. Carroll), was brought to Awapuni by A. E. Neale to be schooled with Evermore, who was recently sent to L. Knapp from the East Coast. They went a couple of rounds, being required to take the brush double and two post-and-rails on the circuit at a steady pace. Although having the advantage of the inside running, Evermore showed up more attractively than his companion, who is much more experienced. Evermore was raced at the Poverty Bay meeting last month.
