NURSES' HOURS OF DUTY
Sir, —Kindly allow me a few words of comment on tlio attitude of the Iter. W. C. Wood, during the discussion on reduced hours for nurses at the Auckland Infirmary. Apart from Mr. Wood's reluctance to be too hasty iu reducing the hours of these exploited nurses, the main point which struck me was his statement that "the lady superintendent had reported that the* nurse-attendants were quite happy, and there had been no complaints." Well, that certainly is refreshing! There had been no complaints (to the superintendent), so everyone was happy! Would Mr. Wood like us to believe that Oliver Twist was the only hungry bov in the workhouse because he was the only one to ask for mora? Nobody, knows better than the superintendent why these girls do not complain. The nurses at Avondale, working over 50 hours a week, never complain to the matron, but reference to the " Letters " page of the Hkhald will show that they are far from satisfied. By the way, when is the Government going to reduce these nurses' hours? J. W. Williamson.
