HINTS AND TIPS
ADVICE TO RIDERS The following hints and tips are supplied by Mr. F. L. Hookway, publicity officer of the Auckland Motor-Cycle Club:— Castor oil is a very bad carbon former, and, although it is popular for racing work, it cannot bo considered an efficient oil for ordinary purposes. Do not allow the brake linings to get worn right down before replacing as there is a danger that the, cam will jam and the brake will then lock up solid Modern clutches stand a lot of abuse, but, none the less, last all the longer for careful handling. The chief point to watch is that there is always a little slack in the operating cable. If there is none, the plater may bo held apart by this mechanism with resultant clutch slip. If the spring clip of a chain connecting link is lost, fine wire wound round the rivet ends like a figure 8 will hold tiie plate secure. To extract, a tight, gudgeon pin or stuck lings from an aluminium piston, warm the piston with boiling water. It will expand slightly and release them. In an emergency, a carbon brush can bo filed up from a piece of carbon out of a flash lamp battery. Such a substitute should not be used permanently. .Never withdraw the amature of a magneto without closing the magnetic circuit with a piece of iron or steel placed across the poles of the magnet. Failure to do this will considerably lessen their magnetism.
