OLYMPIC GAMES
MEDICA'S SUCCESS CALIFORNIAN SWIMMER NEW WOMEN'S RECORD 100 METRES BACKSTROKE By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright LONDON. August 12 The special correspondent in Berlin of the Australian Associated Press states that in the final of the men's 400 metres (437 yards) free-style swimming championship at the Olympic Games, the giant Californian, Medica, allowed the diminutive Japanese to make the pace until the last 15 metres. Medica then made a desperate spurt. Udo could not respond, and Medica won by the length of his long arm. The Dutch girl, Miss D. Senff, seemed superior in the semi-finals of the women's backstroke race. Miss Pat Norton (Australia) turned in third place, but was not able to hold her position.
Percy Oliver (Australia), striking the second slowest heat, had no difficulty in qualifying in tho 100 metres men's backstroke event. Yoshida won comfortably by a touch.
