Roberts, is tho second sportsman to have that honour, Mr. W. R. Kemball having had his colours carried when Gladful won in 1921 and 1922 Tho name of the famous Liberator was tho first to be inscribed twice in the National roll, but he ran in different ownerships each yea r
Rather raw-boned, but a strong tvpe, .Jolly Beggar was brod at Ash hurst eight voars ago. He was broken in bv F. Christmas, trainer to Mr. Roberts, and started onee, then he was turned out for two years on Mr. P. Ryder's property at lnehbonnic. West Coast. Already, it is thought, Mr. Roberts had visualised him a* a Grand National horse.
As a five-year-old Jolly lk'ggar ran three times, without distinction, although he was able to stay with good performers on the track, ami about two years ago li is preparation as a jumper began. Me was not long in the making, and at the Geraldino meeting in September lie won on the second day. At Dunedin he ran third in two hurdle races, but was disqualified from the first for running off at one of the jumps. For a time he returned to high-weight racing, his best being a second to Chidden at Motukarara
As the result of a win in the Longbeach Hurdles at Ashburton victory fo» him in the Levels Hurdles at Washdyke a week later was widely taken tor granted, and his supporters went there expecting to accept a short price. What happened was the subject of discussion for many days afterward.
Jolly Beggar was turning to do his preliminary when the sudden swerve caused his saddle to slip round, and his rider, H. Turner, was thrown. Bucking all the way round the back straight in an endeavour to got rid of tlio swinging saddle, the horse at last was captured and remounted by his jockey The incident was taken to heart by course patrons, who doubted the ability or ambition of a gelding, not notably generous, to win after such a preliminary. On the totalisator lie was relegated to fourth favouritism. Joliv Reggar won by a neck from Umtali, and (lis dividend was three times as largo as was expected by those not in contact with the totalisator. Next came another win at the Christchiireh Hunt meeting, and this was a preliminary to bis first National.
More raring on tho flat was still unproductive of a win until on Now Year's Day Jolly Beggar contested the Greymonth Cup, which he won easily. This remains his solo success on the flat, although ho has frequently run into a place. With the avowed purpose of adding the Great Northern Hurdles to his bag .Tollv Beggar undertook a trip north in the winter. The rich prize eluded him, for he fell at the second to last fence, but he won the To Kuili Hurdles at To Rapa and the Campbell Hurdles at Kllerslie. On Tuesday he ran unplaced in tho .lumpers' Flat Handicap. Yesterday Jolly Beggar won his eighth hurdle race. His record stands at ;51 starts for nine wins, £15)1.5, and a cup valued at £'2o.
I Nigger Minstrel, sire of Jollv Beggar, was one of the best of a vintage year in Australia and Now Zealand. Glenoross, his dam, by Glenapp from Rod Cross, was never raced and never even had a saddle on her. She was a shv breeder and Jolly Beggar is the only one to have raced for her. She died in 15W2.
