MARTHA OPERATIONS 53390 Z. FROM 18,769 TONS [by telegraph—OWN, correspondent] WAIHI, Thursday The following information has been cabled to the London office of the Martha Gold Mining Company (Waihi), Limited:—For the period ended August 1, comprising 22 crushing days, 18,769 tons of ore were crushed for a result of 5339 fine oz. of gold and 40,583 fine 0z.,0f silver. This includes 2339 tons mined from the Grand Junction area, which yielded 571 fine oz. of gold and 3373 fine oz. of silver. *J No. 2 Level.—Bell reef: We have driven to the west on this 40ft. The assay value for this distance is 24s a ton. The lode is about 2ift. wide. No. 7 Level.—North-west prospecting crosscut: From the north branch of the Martha lode it is out 46Sft. in grey andesite. No. 8 Level. —Edward lode crosscut: To the west at 550 ft. south on the vein at 140 ft. in we have driven to southwest 43ft., the assay value being 18s 3d a ton and the width about 3£ft. Junction No. 8 Level. — Royal lode: No. 4 winze was deepened a further 27ft. The assay value is 18s 6d a ton. We intend opening out at 61ft. down. YIELDS OF COMPANIES Nokomai (Central Otago). 18dwt. 12gr. This completes the last paddock and the total return received from an approximate area of oneseventh of an acre isi 3210z. lldwt. 12gr. This was recovered after 8* weeks' sluicing. Stafford (West Coast).—Week ended July 31: 370z. 14dwt. for 120 hours and 10,774 yards. TAVUA POWER PROGRESS The directors of Tavua Power Proprietary, Limited, report that the excavations at Tavua, Fiji, for the powerhouse and foundations for the compressor and generating sets have been completed, the steelwork of the powerhouse buildings has been erected, and the clothing of the buildings in asbestos sheeting is well in hand. They state that the air compressor and first generating set should arrive in Fiji about the middle of August. All other work incidental to t.bp power plant, is well uo to schedule date.
STAFFORD INVESTIGATION The directors of Stafford Gold Dredging, N.L. (West Coast), report that, owing to the low average recoveries obtained during recent months, and in view of the disclosed values from horing not being realised, they have decided to have made a thorough investigation and overhaul of the company's operations and plant. For this purpose operations would be temporarily suspended as from August 1.
