"THE GREAT UNPAID"
"Indeed and in truth, we are the Great Unpaid," said a member at the annual meeting of the Franklin branch of the Justices' Association at Pukekohe, when the duties justices aro called on to perform gratuitously were being discussed. It was mentioned that it was not uncommon for country justices to be called on to sit for whole days and evenings on the Bench hearing indictable cases, without any remuneration whatever. The authenticated instance of a J.P. in Australia who had been called on to drive over 200 miles and give two and a-half days in the performance of a duty, without even having the cost of the petrol refunded to him, was also cited.
