GREAT SOUTH ROAD
WIDENING SCHEME LENGTH OF 100 CHAINS IMPROVED CARRIAGEWAY ONE TREE HILL DECISION A decision to widen the Great South Road between Campbell Road and the Penrose bridge, One Irce Hill, a distance of about 100 chains, was reached at a meeting of the One Tree Hill Borough Council last night. A report prepared by the town clerk, Mr. A. Leese, after the road had been inspected bv the council, recommended that the carriageway should be extended to 46ft., compared with the present width of 26ft., leaving two footpaths each 10ft. wide. It was also suggested that concrete should be laid between the existing concrete and the kerb-line between Green Park Road and the bridge, making a uniform width of 46ft. throughout. The kerb would not require moving in this section. The alignment of the telegraph and power-poles on either side of the road was not in agreement with either the existing kerb-lines or the proposed ones, but careful examination and measurements indicated that it would be quite practicable to ignore the poles entirely when planning the proposed work, as none stood more than 10ft. out from the road-line, and they would not be a serious obstruction to pedestrians, the report stated. Also, as the life of the poles was limited, the matter would eventually be rectified at no cost to the council when replacements became necessary. The report was adopted. The Mayor. Mr. I. J. Goldstine, and the Works Supervision Committee, were empowered to appoint an engineer to report on alternative schemes for doine the work in concrete and in bitumen.
