RIVAL ATHLETES LOVELOCK'S GESTURE ENTRY FOR 1500 METRES SACRIFICE OF PROSPECTS By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright (Received August 2, 0.35 p.m.) LONDON, Aug. 1 According to the Berlin correspondent of the Australian Associated Press, V. P. Boot (New Zealand), has been drawn against Conway (Canada), in the second heat of the 800 metres event at the Olympic Games. In the fourth heat, G. Backhouse (Australia), has been drawn against Handlcy (England). The Australian pole vaulter, E. Woodhousc, is definitely out of the Games through an injured ankle. There is the keenest sympathy with J. E. Lovelock (New Zealand), although outwardly he is the most composed person in the Olympic Village. He has nothing to gain a'nd much to loose through making the splendid gesture of entering for the 1500 metres event.

Lovelock admitted to the correspondent that he knew lie would have bad a bettor chance of winning the 5000 metres, hut he said he did not dare run away from a contest with his old rivals in the 1500 metres. If he wins the event no victory will be more popular, says the writer. The competitive events will commence at 10.30 a.m. to-morrow.

CONTEST IN 1940 DECISION OF COMMITTEE TO BE HELD IN TOKIO (Received August 2, 5.5 p.m.) TOKIO, Aug. 1 A message from Berlin states that the Olympic Committee has decided in favour of Tokio as the venue of the IU4O Olympic Gaines by 36 votes to L' 6. The venue of the preceding winter games will be decided next year. In an interview the Mayor of Tokio, Mr. Ushizuka, conveyed through the Australian Associated Press, hearty thanks to Australia and New Zealand for voting* in favour of Tokio for the next Olympic Games.
