DEVONPORT SHIELD
COMPETITION COMMENCED With payers from the majority of the club sides included in the representative team the first series of panics in the Devonjort Shield competition was decided. Owing to the rouerli nature of the grcflinds there was little play of a high standard anil there were no surprising results. Following were the scores:— St. Luke's, '2; Mount Eden. 1. Somerville, 1; Grammar Old Hoys, 1. University, 2; Training College, 0. Papatoetoo, 1, Y.M.C.A., (I. ST. LUKE'S WIN The rough ground upset the St. Luke's combination, although it finally beat Mount Eden by two goals to one. At half-time Mount Eden was leading by one goal to nil. St. Luke's adapted itself to the conditions better in the second spell, and, with harder hitting and Jess bunching in the circle, registered its two scores. Mount Eden did welt an.l was unlucky not to scoro on several occasions. The scorers were Alexander, 2 (St. Luke's), and Hushell (Mount Eden). Messrs. H. Watts and 11. Skinner were umpires. DRAW FOR CRAMMAR Soinerville rnnde a good showing against. Grammar Old Hoys and had a decided advantage in the first spell. The exchanges were more even after the interval, although Grammar never looked like a winning side. The ground was poor and upset any attempt at snappy, short passing. Homerville missed the leadership of Wellbourne, while Grammar was without its regular inside forwards. The Orammar forwards were disinclined to fnckle, but Soinerville lacked finish. The final score was:— Grammar, 1 ; Soinerville, 1 Both goals were registered in the first spell. Messrs. _ If. McQuurrie and A. Williams were umpires. COMBINATION UPSET Training College nut up a slightly improved defence in its match against University on the i\o. ground, but University should have been capable of winning by more than two goals to nil. University's combination was greatly upset, not only by the poor ground, but also by the fact that four junior players were included in the side. When the University forwards reached the circlo they were greatly hampered by the solid defence put' up by the two fullbacks and also by the goalkeeper, who made some splendid clearances. The only outstanding moment in the game was when Roberts scored University's first goal with a beautiful angle shot. The second goal was scored by Eraser, who netted from a melee in front of the goal. Messrs. T. Clark and G. Wells were umpires. INDIFFERENT SHOOTING Poor shooting by Papatoetoe spoiled the match in winch Y.M.C.A. was beaten by one goal to nil. Played on the No. !) ground, which 'was rough, and on which tho grass was long, the match was seldom exciting, although in tho early stages Papatoetoe had Y.M.C.A. defending strongly. During this time Papatoetoe lost many chances by erratic work in the circle The Y.M.C.A. defence was fairly sound, bill the team was very weak on attack and a score never appeared likely, any movements being broken up before iho circle was reached Papatoetoe's goal was scored by Chapman early in the second half. ' Messrs. G. Peace ami G Gutry were umpires. LOWER GRADE RESULTS Second Grade.—University, r>, Waitemata, 4, St. Lukes, I, Soinerville, :j; Papatoetoo, J, Albertians, 0; Y.M.C.A., i, Air Hase, 0.
