India won the toss and decided to bat on a wicket which did not assist the bowlers. In making 40, Ramaswami gave a faultless exhibition of batting. Wazir Ali, who compiled 42 in 145 minutes, played defensive cricket. A brilliant exhibition of wicketkeeping was given for England by Duckworth, and it is considered that his display is certain to gain him a place in the team to visit Australia. Hammond gave a classic display of batting, making 118 not out. He was at the wickets for two hours, his score including 16 boundaries.
