MR STANLEY SOWDEN AUSTRALIAN JOURNALIST (Beceived July 20, 9.25 p.m.) MELBOURNE, July 20 The death has occurred of Mr. Stanley Sowden, a prominent journalist, whoso father, Sir William Sowden, was part proprietor of the now defunct Adelaide Register. MR. GEORGE BLACK POLITICIAN AND WRITER SYDNEY, July 20 The death has occurred of Mr. George Black, who for many years was identified with political life in New South Wales. He was a foundation member of the Labour movement, also a journalist on the earliest newspapers. His age was 83. The late Mr. Black contributed much of considerable excellence to Australian literature. He wrote gallery notes in the New South Wales Parliament for the old Australian Star, and later for the Sunday Times. For a time he was sub-editor of the Bulletin, and left that journal to assume the editorial control of the Worker. In his younger days, Mr. Black was a prolific? writer of books, prose and verse, and pamphlets he issued on Labour contained some of the highest ideals of the movement in which he was one of the earlv leaders.
