ERRATIC SHOOTING
FRENCH NAVAL GUNNERS PANIC AT A RESORT < PARIS, July 10 Thousands of holiday-makers at the seaside resort of St. Tropez, in the South of France, who were interested in watching the French submarine Atalante attempting to sink a burning yacht, the Hippocampe, fled panicstricken when shells began to land among them.
The Hippocampe, laden with four tons of petrol, had caught fire and the flames were menacing harbour craft. Hie Atalante, responding to the owners' appeals, had tried to tow her to tlio open se.a. She had broken loose, however, whereupon the Atalanto attempted to sink her.
The first shot, from a 75-millimetre gun, landed near the gendarmerie on shore. The second severed an electric cable and damaged a sawmill, while the third fell on to the beach. The yacht was not scuppered until the 18th shot. The Minister of Marine, M. Dupare, lias ordered an inquiry immediately the Atalante reaches port.
