DEFENCE OF AUCKLAND
Sir, —1 trust that in the schemo for defence of Auckland City the fact is not overlooked that there ■ is such a place as the Tasman Sea. A raid by enemy ships would most certainly take place from the west and not the east, as appears to be the general impression, Turn About.
Sir, —I would suggest to tlio Auckland and suburban Mayors that they do what they can to help in the defence of their city before harassing an overworked Government. We have at present in New Zealand an efficient and capable permanent staff for instructional purposes in various arms of defence, but lack the number of willing and patriotic trainees to take advantage of their services and Government equipment provided free. I recently attended a military camp at Rotorua and was surprised at the tjinall number of city lads that attended in comparison to the largo population of Auckland, amply showing the apathy of the public to matters of vital importance.
