RELIEF WORK NUMBERS
INCREASE IN NELSON FORTNIGHTLY PAYMENT £1152 [by telegraph—OWN correspondent] NELSON, Saturday The fact that there were at present more men on relief work in Nelson than ever before was revealed at a meeting of the City Council. The engineer's report stated that there were 309 men employed on relief works in the city, an increase of 101 since March 28. Mr. L. C. Pettit, asked if the increase was normal for this time of the year. The engineer replied that there had never been so many before. A member asked if the increase was the result of the 2s an hour being paid to relief workers. Mr. H. Hurst suggested that many men were now going on relief who had not been on it before. The accounts passed for payment at the meeting showed that £1152 was the fortnightly pay sheet for unemployed in the city.
