DERAILED ENGINE

RESTORATION TO LINE SUNDAY EMERGENCY SERVICE Built to clear the railway engine which blocked the main north line when it was derailed about a quarter of a mile south of the Mount Eden station on Friday night, the temporary deviation of about 50 yards for week-end traffic was completed at about 6.40 on Saturday morning. Trains were required to proceed' at a slow pace over this section, and minor delays resulted 111 all services thus affected. When jacking operations began yesterday to restore the locomotive to the track, it was found necessary to suspend services between Mount Eden and the city. Northern passengers were conveyed by bus, via Newmarket, to make the connections up till 4.40 p.m., when the track was again clear for through traffic.

Not a hitch delayed the big task in hand yesterday. Solid ground for the jacks was fortunately available, and the engine was hoisted without great difficulty. While it was thus suspended sleepers and a rail were laid beneath its wheels and linked to the line which it jumped. A steel bar was extended to another engine, and the massive 73ton locomotive was hauled back on to the line quite easily. Throughout the day the work attracted considerable public attention.
