MEAT IN LONDON

FIiOZEN AND CHILLED PRICES AT SMITHFIELD CHILLED BEEF HIGHER (Received July 10, 5.5 p.m.) LONDON, July IS Following are the latest quotations for frozen and chilled meat, with those of the previous week for comparison:—

The weekly quotations are based on actual sales of wholesale quantities of carcases of mutton or lamb or of quarters of beef delivered to Smithfield market and/or London stores. They are compiled by the Quotations Committee, Smithfield. io arrive at tho equivalent ex ship values one farthing per pound should be deducted from the prices quoted above. Quotations given represent the average for tho week, and aro not selected lines, but for parcels fairly representative of the bulk of shipments now on offer. BETTER TONE IN BEEP FAIR TRADE IN MUTTON Ihe following private cablegrams, dealing with tho Smithfield meat market, have been received:— Bank of New Zealand.—Wethers: Tho market is steady. CANTERBURY PRODUCE [by TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION] UHRISTCHURCII, Saturday The Canterbury grain and produce markets have had a very quiet week, with business in almost every section restricted, although there is still a certain amount of interest in Dakotas. White potatoes aro particularly weak and tho value has slipped further. Even Dakotas do not enjoy a big trade, but there aro enough orders coming in to keep tho market steadier than that for . Whites. There is practically.no demand foi Whites at all and sellers in Canterbury aro embarrassed by offers from Timaru at 80s, f.o.b. Feeling is growing in the trade that the crop in Canterbury is a plentiful one, and reports from South Canterbury and North Otago indicate that supplies there are more plentiful than they were last year by a substantial margin. The nominal prico for Whites is £2 15s on trucks, but even at this figure sales aro exceedingly difficult to make. The arrival of supplies of Japanese and Californian onions has further embarrassed the onion market, which is very weak. There is a limited demand for extra good quality, but tho sample has to be of special attractiveness to meet buyers' requirements. The prico is nominally £3 on trucks, but practically no business is passing. There has been a slight finning, in good whole fowl wheat, of which deliveries have fallen off recently. The market has responded only to tho extent of a halfpenny a bushel,, but there is a rather better tone than there has been for some weeks. Undergrade is unchanged. Although there is a littlo more interest in small seeds, there is in no sense yet a true market. Supplies in merchants' stores are fairly plentiful.

Oats and chaff remain steady, although there is no great, trade in them. Offerings from the country art lew, and this lias so far kept the market steady..
