POLICE RESERVE
END OF SERVICES GOVERNMENT'S DECISION DISBANDING AT END OF JULY [BY TELEGRAPH SPECIAL REPORTER] WELLINGTON. Wednesday The police force reset re which was established in 1934, following on disturbances in some of the main centres, will be disbanded as from the end of the month, according to an announcement made this evening by the Minister in charge of the police, Hon. P. Fraser. "It has been decided to dispense with the services of the leserve," Mr. Fraser said, "and members are being notified accordingly. Their services will be dispensed with as from July 31." The reserve, which was established for the purpose of providing an auxiliary force which would be available in cases of emergency, consists of 138 men with detachments only in the principal cities of the Dominion. Members are paid a retainer of £1 a month, but if they are called up for duty they are paid on the same scale as regular members of the police force. So far members of the reserve have been called up on very few occasions, and then chiefly for the purpose of assisting in the control of crowds on ceremonial occasions. Members were required to report for police training at regular intervals. Many members of the reserve are applicants for permanent positions in the regular force, and some who were members of the auxiliary detachments at their inception have since joined the police force.
