Wednesday "There are too many under-nourished Maori children in the district," said the coroner at Wliakatane yesterday at nn inquest into the death of a Maori child, Repika Kru Hahia, aged two years. Tlio child's grandmother said she was taking care of the infant. She had fed it upon kiunara and puha and gave it milk when she could procure any. She had been advised by women to try certain patent foods, but she knew noth ing about them. The child was ill for several days. Dr. J. C. Wftdinore said that in his opinion the child was weakly and suffered frotn digestive disturbances duo to malnutrition. It collapsed with heart failure due to its weakness. He said there was ft good deal of undernourishment 111 Maori children at present, due mainly to their not getting enough milk. A verdict of doath from natural causes was returned.
