"A spooning couple might have walked out on to the road; to do things like that, go out to Muriwai," said Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M., when Harold Kingsford Brainsby pleaded in tho Magistrate's Court yesterday that a speed of 50 miles an hour along the waterfront road was safe. Defendant was charged with driving at a speed which, under tho circumstances, might have been dangerous to the public.
It was stated by traffic officers that defendant was travelling at 55 miles an hour, but defendant, who pleaded not guilty, claimed that as the offence occurred late at night and there was no traffic on tho road the speed was quite sate. A fine of £2 and costs was imposed. A statement that he had been picking up runners who had collapsed in a 26-miles marathon race arranged by tho Auckland Amateur Athletic Association, was made by Allan W il lin in Franklin, who was charged with dangerous driving. It was stated that ho had been travelling at 00 miles an hour along tho waterfront road. Ho said he was returning to the course after taking home the runners who had been unable to continue. A fmo of £1 and costs was imposed. Stated by tho traffic authorities to have travelled along the waterfront road at 50 miles an hour and to have had several convictions for dangerous driving, Edward Ralph Plowman was fined £2 and had his licence endorsed. A plea that he was trying to catch a boat was mado by. a taxi-driver, Marshall Trevor McGarve.v, who was said to have driven from tho railway station to the Ferry Buildings at -10 miles an hour and to have passed 12 cars on the way. He was fined £1 10s and costs. "1 was waiting for a boat and decided to test my car to see the result of some adjustments," said Redvers Otway, who was alleged to have driven at 55 miles an hour on the waterfront road. Ho was fined £1 10s and costs. Alleged by the traffic officers to have cut two dangerous corners on tho waterfront road and to have crossed the Ngapipi Road intersection at 40 miles an hour, Peter Griffen was fined £1 10s and costs. "Ho was going 'flat out,' " said the Devonport Borough traffic inspector, Mr. C. E. Harper, when W. F. Payne was charged with dangerous driving. Defendant, who was stated to have driven a truck through Devonport and on to the wharf at between 35 and 40 miles an hour, was fined £2 and costs. For driving without a licence he was fined 10s.
