KILLED ON RAILWAY

WORKMAN CROSSING LINE FATALITY AT SOUTHDOWN A fatality occurred at the Southdown railway station shortly after seven o'clock yesterday morning, Mr. Charles Vincent West, aged 48, labourer, of C'levedon Road, Otahuhu, being knocked down by an engine and killed. Mr. West travelled each day by train from Otahuhu to Southdown, which is a short distance from the Otahuhu Municipal Quarries, where he was employed. On leaving the train yesterday Mr. West walked across the main down line toward the road on the east side of the station. An engine with a horse-box was proceeding southward on the main line and the engine, which was travelling tender first, struck Mr. West. It threw him clear of the line, severe head and leg injuries being inflicted. l)r. V. Griflin, of Otahuhu. was summoned, but Mr. West had been killed instantaneously. Mr. West was a keen follower of Rugby football, and had acted as masseur and trainer for the Otahuhu senior club for several seasons. He is survived by his wife and two children. An inquest was opened before the district coroner, Mr. J. V. Lawes, at Otahuhu, yesterday, and was adjourned after evidence of identification had been taken.
