LOCAL BODY CONTRACT
INCREASED COSTS FACTOR NO POWER OF ALTERATION [from ouh own corhkspondknt] WHANGAREI, Tuesday Tho fact that tho council had no legal power to make any alteration to a contract in order to compensate a contractor for increased costs due to the operation of tho new industrial legislation was mentioned by the chairman of the Works Committee, Mr. R. S. Finch, at last evening's meeting of the Whangarei Borough Council The matter came forward as the result of representations made to the council by Messrs. Hardie Brothers, the council's metal contractors, that on account of tho increased costs brought about by the recent industrial legislation their sub-coutractors had given uotico that they were unable to carry on. Messes. Hardie Brothers asked tho council to meet them as from July 1. Thf Mayor, Mr. W. Jones, said ho thought it was possible that validating legislation would be introduced to allow local bodies to deal with cases of this kind, in tho caso under review he agreed to refer tho engineer's report to a committee to investigate and report to the council.
