CRICKET IN ENGLAND
NEW ZEALAND PLAYERS TWO CENTURIES REGISTERED [from our own correspondent] LONDON, Juno 20 Another brilliant innings by C. S. Dempster this week will establish his position at thci head of the English averages more firmly than over. Playing for Leicester against Hampshire, the only unbeaten teams in the championship. Dempster scored 142 not out. He produced by far the best batting of his side, getting well to the pitch of the ball and driving brilliantly. Ho scored his century in 2 hours 10 minutes, and drove 12 balls to the boundary for four. He dominated the play, and n sixth-wicket partnership, in which he was the chief figure, added ].'S9 in less than two hours. C. C. Dacro and K. C. James are content with more modest positions on the average table than Dempster, but both of them have done well at the wicket. Playing for Northamptonshire against Warwickshire, Dacro notched his best score since 1934. Ho compiled 119 runs in two and a-quartcr hours, hitting ono six and 15 fours. He also scored a bright 34 against Glamorgan before being bowled. James, whoso wicket-keeping has been tho subject of most favourable comment, also did well against Warwick, scoring 49 in a merry innings which included eight fours. He followed this up with a brisk 40 against Middlesex . June has not favoured cricketers. Wet weather has interrupted play, and several county treasurers aro bemoaning the fact. It is reported that Notts has recorded a loss of revenue of £ISOO. Derbyshire is £9OO down and Glamorgan is £SOO to tho bad. Normally, June is the best financial month for cricket. The All-India team at present touring Great Britain has struck a bad patch. So far it has won nono of its matches and has drawn several. Caustic comments have been made about tho team in Bombay, and such have been described in England as bad sportsmanship. Tho Indians have been unfortunate with the weather and they have been weakened by injuries.
