WAITEMATA COUNTY
RATES STRUCK FOR YEAR INCREASES IN SOME RIDINGS Rates for the ensuing year were struck by tho Waitomata County Council at its meeting yesterday, as follows: Wainui riding, 3d in tho pound on capital value; Takapuna riding, 2Jd; Titirangi riding, 2:} d; Birkenhead riding, 2Jd; Kaukapakapa riding, Kumeu riding, 2Jd; Mairetahi riding, lid; Waitakere riding, 2Jd; Waikumeto riding, 2Jd; Pukeatua riding, 2Jd; Waipareira riding, lid. These rates include tho gerferal charge, loan rates and the hospital levy. In the Pukeatua riding the new rate represents an increaso of Jd over last year, that in the Titirangi and Birkenhead ridings, an increase of id, and that in the Waipareira riding an increase of £d. The rato in the Takapuna riding is -}d lower, while the others arc uncliangcd. A deputation of about 60 residents waited on tho council to protest agilinst the removal of the county foreman at Pukeatua, Mr. D. Munro, and tho council decided to reinstate him. OOOK COUNTY LEVY INCREASE IN MOST RIDINGS [by telegraph—OWN correspondent] GISBORNE, Thursday The rates struck by the Cook County Council total £35,641, an increase of £3274 on last year. All ridings except two participated in tho increased rates by various amounts ranging from id to Id. "The position in which this council finds itself to-day is similar to of county councils throughout New Zealand," said the chairman, Mr. C. Matthews. "While the reduction in interest charges and the conversion of loans gave some relief in tho county general account, this saving was nullified to some extent by a considerable increase in the hospital levy. Credit balances which were built up by economising in road expenditure during "the past few years have now been absorbed. This in itself would almost necessitate an increase in most riding rates, but the action of tho Government in bringing counties under awards, and tho general effect of the legislation, will be to increase costs up to probably 33 1-3 pot* cent. The result is that the council is reluctantly compelled to increnso most of tho riding rates to meet this increased cost. Two ridings have not increased their rates this year, but having done so last year they are in a better position to meet tho increase." SMALL REDUCTION MADE PUKEKOHE TOWN AREA [I'ROM our own correspondent] PUKEKOHE. Thursday Provision to reduce tho rates for the current year by 1-lGd in tho pound in tho town district area only, the remaining rates to be the same as last year, was contained in the estimates adopted at a meeting of the Pukekoho Borough Council last night. The rates to be struck arc 215-32 d in the pound on the outer borough area, and 2jjd in tho inner area. These, with other standing charges such as rubbish colloction, are estimated to yield a total of £11,052 10s, Bd. Tho amount estimated to bo expended on street maintenance and construction, maintaining parks and rosorvos and
similar services is £3311.
