CHANGES RECOMMENDED EMPLOYMENT OF NATIONALS OTTAWA, June 16 A report submitted to the House of Commons by its Committee on <Jndustrial and Foreign Relations urges greater employment of Canadians on steamers operated by the Government, or under Government subsidies, and recommends that 50 per cent of those employed on Canadian National ships as stewards and firemen be Canadians. Stating that the Canadian-Australian Line employs only eight Canadians in 510 members of crews, the committee recpmmends that tlw* lino b6 recjuosted " to afford Canadian seamen a reasonable degree of employment at the earliest convenience." It urges that the Canadian Pacific be obliged to nse only Canadian seamen in deck services on the Canada-Orient Line. The Canadian Pacific had protested that to replace Chinese with whites on Oriental liners would involve so much extra cost as to make operation .financially impossible. Of 2033 men in the service 265 are whites.
