Claudctte Colbert's next picture for Paramount will bo "I, James Lewis." Frank Lloyd will direct. Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer have bought a story called "Native Son Returns," and intend to star Spencer Tracy in it. It is about an ex-convict. Warner Brothers have bought Dodie Smith's play, "Call it a Day." They frill produce it with Pat O'Brien and Josephine Hutchinson in the leadinc roles. Charlie Chaplin has announced that tho picture which ho will direct with Pauletto Goddard starring is to go into production around tho end of this month. Pioneer Pictures are planning to make tho first biographical film in colour. It will bo based on tho life of General Gordon, tracing his career from China to Khartoum. Edmond Greville, the brilliant young English director, who made tho French film "Remous," has returned to England. Ho is to direct "Gipsy Melody" for British International Pictures. Ray Bolger, a New York stage dancer, has been signed by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer to appear opposite Eleanor Powell in her next musical, Born to Danco. n Colo Porter is writing additional music. Erich Pommer, the German producer who made "Vaudeville" anjl "Congress Dances," is to begin his first English picture shortly. It will be called "I Serve," and will deal with tho life of Queen Elizabeth. Flora liobson will play tho Queen. Henry Fonda has boon signed by Universal to appear in a ccynedy called "Reno in tho Fall." It is possible that his ex-wife, Margaret Sullavan, may play opposite him. Tho two have recently finished working together in "Tho Moon's Our Home." Carole Lombard, who has already shown off her dancing ability in her pictures with George lTaft, has decided to competo with the crooners now. And Fred Mac Murray is willing to make a duet of it. They are both taking lessons in voice production and will have tho chief roles in "Swing Your Lady." Tho words and music are by Oscar Hammerstein and Ralph Rainger. Arthur Hornblow will produce the picture for Parn.mount. .
