CHARGE OF FIGHTING
EARLY MORNING INCIDENT ! TAXI-DRIVER CRITICISED Criticism of'a taxi-driver's action in driving half-drunken men to three hotels in the early hours of the morning was voiced by the magistrate, Mr. W. R. McKean, and Sub-Inspector Fox in the Police ' Court yesterday. The matter arose when Richard Ferguson and Thomas Kennelly were charged with fighting. Ferguson admitted the offence, but Kennelly, a taxi-driver, who was represented by Mr. Fawcett, pleaded not guilty. Sub-Inspector Fox said a constable had found the two men fighting near j a hotel about 1.10 a.m. on April 5. £ sguson said he had engaged a taxi with another man, who went away without paying his share of the fare. Ferguson attempted to do the same and Konnelly tried , to stop him. Mr. Fawcett said there had been several cases recently where taxi-drivers had been assaulted Into at night, and j in reply to M,r. Fox's suggestion that I Kennelly should not have driven round ' the hotels, counsel submitted that if ! his client had refused fares ho would j have been in trouble. Ferguson wa'fe fined 20s and costs, and Kennelly was discharged on payment of costs.
