YOUNG TEACHERS
POSTS IN COUNTRY SHORTAGE OF APPLICANTS WARNING BY MINISTER fIJV TELEGRAPH —SI'I'X'I AI; KKPORTFJt] WELLINGTON. Friday A difficulty being experienced by certain education hoards in securing teachers for sole charge of Grade 1 schools and Grade 1 assistant positions in rural schools was commented on in an interview to-night by the Minister of Education, the Hon. l\ Eraser.
"At the beginning of the year," said Mr Eraser, "it was decided to keep all certificated trained teachers not then holding permanent positions in employment as supplementary teachers until they had an opportunity of securing permanent appointments. Unfortunately, a number of these young teachers are not applying for positions as \acanoios occur, with the result that education hoards are faced with the alternative of employing uncertificated and retiicd teachers when there is really no necessity for them to do so.
"Education boards are therefore being asked to notify individually all these additional teachers that, unless they make reasonable efforts to secure permanent positions, or accept relieving work wherever it is offered, it will lw l .necessary to determine whether the policy of retaining such teachers on the salary list will be continued."
