PACIFIC SHIPPING

DANGER TO BRITISH LINES DOMINION SUBSIDY PROPOSALS LONDON, June 3 The Daily Mail announces that Mr. Edward Beatty, chairman of Canadian Pacific Steamships, Limited, shortly will join in the Pacific shipping discussions in London. According to the paper it is believed that British shipping quarters in Canada, Australia and New Zealand would be willing to consider providing their quotas of a £250,000 subsidy if the British Government would adopt such a policy. It is understood that Fiji would support the scheme financially. If Mr. Walter Runciman, President of the Board of Trade, could gain British support, the subsidy plan would be quickly evolved, the paper states. The Daily Herald says it is impossible to read without disgust that British shipping in the Pacific is in imminent danger of elimination by United States lines. Nobody likes subsidies much, but it is not wise to rule out their possibility when it is desirable to meet a situation by counter-subsidy. If British lines were driven out then United States lines would be free to increase their freight rates.
