COMFORT OF PIGS
CIARE IN COLD WEATHER In cold and frosty weather, pigs should receive a warm feed night and morning, otherwise they will use too large a percentage of their feed as fuel to keep up their body heat. Generally speaking, potatoes are the only food improved by boiling, but there are several other ways of adding warmth to the rations. When milk is in short supply, molasses and water is a very good substitute. A quart of the former to four gallons of the latter is the usual mixture. Hot water is required to dissolve the molasses and this warms the food up nicely. Sorrel seed is valuable as a winter food, too, as it has to be brought to boiling point before use and if heated in the late afternoon provides a warm feed for night and morning Whole grains also, especially barley, can be brought to boiling point for softening and warm feeding. Failing any of these, hot water should be added to whatever food the pigs receive. Be sure they have ample bedding, too.
