PETROL LORRY BURNED

SUDDENLY CAUGHT FIRE RUN OFF ROAD BY DRIVER [by telegbaph—OWN cobbespoxdextJ • PALMEBSTON NORTH, Wednesday A petrol lorry belonging to the Texas Oil Company was destroyed by fire on the road between Wanganui and Wangaehu this afternoon. The driver stated that while the lorry was travelling along the road it suddenly caught fire, and before he could reach for his fire-extinguisher the flames had a big hold. Realising that the lorry was doomed, he decided to run the vehicle off the road over a depression near by. This involved considerable personal risk, as he had to jump clear of the moving vehicle. The machine capsized against a gorse hedge and burned fiercely. Passing motorists were warned to drive quickly, as a drum of petrol under the upturned chassis was a source of danger. The driver lost his personal effects, which were in the cab of the lorry. Three petrol lorries belonging to other firms arrived before the fire died down, and they were compelled to wait until the danger was past.
