BOBBY CALF TRADE

IMPROVING CONDITIONS THE IMMATURE ANIMALS OVERLAPPING BY CARRIERS Aspects of the bobby calf trade are being discussed by meat exporters with the Minister of Agriculture, the Hon. W. Lee Martin. Representatives of the exporting firms met the Minister and Agriculture Department officers in Wellington last week and they agreed to endeavour to overcome some of the obvious difficulties in the trade. The collection of immature calves will be discouraged. In the past one and two day-old calves have been sent to the freezing works, but it is intended to raise the age' to at least three days and possibly five days. This is a matter for arrangement largely between the exporters and the carriers, who are often buying agents. It is not in the interests of the exporters to receive immature calves as the meat is not suitable. The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals has been very active on this question. Some county councils have expressed concern regarding the damage done to side roads by lorries engaged in the trade. The possibility of zoning to prevent overlapping has been discussed. The bobby calf season will start next month. Prices are expected to be about the same as last year, generally '3s to os, depending on the value of the skins.
