NEW SCHOOL SITE
TEN ACKES ACQUIEED PROJECT FOR ELLERSLIE FOR SECONDARY PUPILS By notice in the Gazette 10 acres of land on the western side of the Great South Road have been acquired for the purposes of a secondary school under the Public Works Act. The site is for the projected Ellerslie Grammar School, which is intended to relieve the congestion at the Auckland Grammar School and also to serve the southern and eastern districts of Auckland.
The land now acquired is in the One Tree Hill borough and is some distance from the intersection of Jubilee Road. It is about a quarter of a mile from the Ellerslie railway station. The land, which is mostly used for grazing, contains an old racing stable.
Professor A. P. W. Thomas said yesterday that so far no plans had been prepared for the school building, but the whole question of these and finance would now have to be gone into. The board first made application to the Government for the land some years ago, and before the Hon. P. Fraser came into office, two previous Ministers of Education had inspected the site. The board had discussions with the present Minister of Education on the subject in March last and the Minister of Public Works, the Hon. R. Semple, made an announcement a week later that he was prepared to assist. The need for the establishment of a grammar Bchool at EllersHe has been impressed on the authorities by the fact that the Auckland Grammar School, which was built to accommodate 600 pupils, now has a roll of 950.
