RADIO IN THE HOME

PROGRAMME FEATURES INDIAN WOMAN SINGER ANTICIPATING THE DERBY i BY ALL-WAVE "They're Off," a topical theme programme, is to be presented by IYA tonight. The offering will present many interesting and little-known sidelights on the Derby, to be run next Wednesday. Friday evening's programme will feature at 8.16, and again at 9.20, the Indian mezzo-soprano Bina Addy, who is under a special engagement to the board. Miss Addy will be heard again on Saturday evening, when the programme is to include also Sydney MacEwan, tenor, and Duncan Morison, pianist, in a recital of Scottish and Gaelic music. The after-church session on Sunday will be devoted to a recorded musical presentation of Puccini's "La Boheme," the four acts being broadcast. Wednesday's chamber music feature is to be the performance, by Haydn Murray, violin, Harold Baxter, viola, and Lalla Hemus, 'cello, of Beethoven's "String" Trio.

To-night, from 2YA, Dora Judson, solo pianist, and the Studio Orchestra under the baton of Leon de Mauny, will render Saint Saens' Concerto for Piano and Orchestra in C minor. This, one of the most pleasing of the works of the composer, will be put on the air between 9.34 and 10 p.m. On Friday the Wellington station will again, for the early part of the evening, relay the vocal competition of the New Zealand Eisteddfod, and on Saturday the whole of the final concert of the national competitions will be broadcast. On Sunday evening at 9.5 an unusual talk is scheduled from 3YA. Miss Evelyn Gardiner, principal contralto of tho Gilbert and Sullivan Opera Company, will present an "illustrated" discourse on "The Woes of a Contralto." Madame Winnie Fraser, soprano, will contribute to the earlier part of the< same programme.

The time when the stage cast a wary eye on broadcasting has long since passed, having given place to the more friendly co-operative spirit evidenced by the announcement that "The Circle," a comedy in three acts, is to be presented by the J. C. Williamson Dramatic Company from 4YA on Sunday, between 9.5 and 10.25 p.m. The play, specially adapted for broadcasting, was written by Somerset Maugham and the cast, in order of appearance, will be: —Arnold Champion-Cheney, M.P., Arthur Lane; Mrs. Shenstonc (Anna), Connie Martyn; Elizabeth, Elaine Hamill; Edward Luton, Compbell Copeliti; Clive Champion-Cheney, Lloyd Lamble; Lady Champion-Cheney, Ethel Morrison; Lord Porteous, Harvey Adams., The play is to be produced by Harvey Adams and is to be broadcast also by 2YA.

A progrsimme indicative of the forward strides made in overcoming the technical difficulties of world-wide broadcasting is to be presented by the Daventry stations on Monday at 5.10 p.m., when a programme originating in South Africa will be put on the air. The programme is in celebration of Empire Day and has been devised by the African Broadcasting Company. Three Australian artists, Richard Chugg (flute), Osric F3 T fe ('cello) and Max Pirani (piano) are to broadcast over GSB-N from 4.45 to 5.25 p.m. on Wednesday. Next Thursday's programme will include at 4.20 p.m. a description from Southampton of the departure of the liner Queen Mary for New York and is to be followed at 5.25 p.m. by a funniag commentary on the 153 rd Derby Stakes.

Two independent efforts are being made to improve the servicing of radio receivers and the trade generally. The first of these, at the instance of the Post and Telegraph Department, is in the licensing of radio servicemen at an annual fee of £5 ss. This step has been viewed with some apprehension in some quarters, but others contend that anyone attempting to rectify faults in such a complicated mechanism as a modern radio set should have a thorough knowledge of the work and should use proper fault locating instruments. However, the licensing will extend to cover the offering of radio parts for sale. The other step, taken by the_ repair men themselves, aims at ensuring the possession of servicemen of the proper knowledge and qualifications and a raising of the status of the trade and service generally.
